It was a glorious sunny morning, everything had gone smoothly and I experienced one of those mummy moments.
You know the one when you wish that every morning was just like this!
We got in to the car and I strapped the kids in as we set off for school.
My friend Henry and I had agreed shared the pick up’s and drop off’s, so we stopped off on route to collect his daughter.
Now picture this, I’m in the driving seat, my son is in his car seat and the two girls are strapped in next to him side by side.
The radio was playing and we were singing along happily.
“Ah this is nice” I thought!
Suddenly I heard a strange sound and looked into my rear view mirror.
Let’s give mummy a heart attack
I noticed that my son was moving his head back and forth. I can only describe this as the funky chicken move.
The next thing I saw was him vomiting! Now, when I say vomiting, I mean serious projectile action in every direction.
“Mummy” he cried. He was shaking his head and doing his best to climb out of his car seat and on to me!
Let’s not forget I was driving the car!! There was vomit EVERYWHERE!
The girls who were probably around the age of 7 at the time, where completely freaking out and screaming at the top of their lungs. I tried desperately to calm everyone down but they couldn’t hear me over sound of their screams.
IT WAS A MESS!!
I wound down the windows to get some fresh air and to eliminate some of the smell which was making me gag behind the driving seat.
My son was absolutely beside himself by now. He was crying, screaming and vomiting all at once. As if this wasn’t enough, I couldn’t park up to address the situation because I was driving on the highway!!
I felt like I was having a heart attack, I don’t think I had ever felt such a wave of anxiety in one hit like that ever before.
There was nothing I could do but DRIVE! I did everything in my power to focus on the road and blocked out the sound of three hysterical kids. We finally arrived at school where a friend kindly helped me manage the situation and get the girls in to school.
I cleaned up as much as I could and faced the dreaded trip back home, with my sick son.
As parents, we face many situations like this. Parenting takes us to places where we would NEVER have gone without becoming a parent. It really challenges us but also helps us to become stronger and more resilient. We look back at that journey to school and laugh about it now. It’s embedded within our minds as one of the funniest parenting experiences.
