Hiding behind a smile

“I hide behind hurt with a smile on my face”.

Mothers are masters at hiding their emotions. Nothing masks the pain of a broken heart like a smile!

It was the longest week of our life. I stayed by her side all day and all night. My heavy eyes refused to close just in case she woke up from the pain. I pressed the button for her to get more morphine, she couldn’t find the strength to move her frail fingers. In that moment, I would have done anything to take her place. Watching your child come back from the brink of death is something that no parent should ever have to face. I don’t think you ever recover from that, you just find ways to cope with it. Every morning when the doctor came to see us or a visitor passed by, I plucked up the courage to smile. I smiled to give my daughter hope, I smiled to give her strength but it was the hardest thing I ever did. Underneath it all, I was a broken woman.

That’s what we do, we are mothers, the most powerful beings of all. We not only bring life into this world but we do everything in our power to protect the ones we love. We put everyone and everything before us and hide behind our SMILE.

We do it every day

This is an extreme example of when I hid behind my smile. However, we do this everyday!

When we argue with our partner

When we receive a health diagnosis

When we learn that we have lost our job

When we feel lost or alone

When we carry guilt

When we are struggling with finances

When we feel scared or anxious

I just wanted someone to listen to me. I was desperate to be heard. I wanted to speak without judgement. I needed to lighten my heart, unleash the pain and find a way to move forward.

Are you hiding behind your smile?
